WhatsApp export problems
Exporting a chat should take under a minute, but several things can go wrong. Here are the common ones and what to do about each.
The "Export chat" option isn't there
Outdated version
The most common cause. Update WhatsApp from your app store and try again.
You're looking in the wrong place
On Android it's in the three-dot menu, under "More". On iPhone it is NOT there: you tap the contact or group name and scroll to the bottom of the screen. This trips up most people who switched systems.
Business account or region
On some WhatsApp Business accounts and in certain countries the option may not be available.
The export hangs or fails
You're exporting with media
Cause number one. A chat with years of photos and voice notes can exceed a gigabyte, and the phone runs out of memory partway through. Choose "Without media".
No space on the phone
Exporting needs temporary space to assemble the file. If your storage is nearly full, it fails without a clear error.
The chat is enormous
Chats spanning five-plus years in very active groups can take several minutes. Leave the app open and in the foreground while it works.
I exported it but can't find the file
Check where you sent it
Exporting doesn't save the file automatically — it offers to share it. If you picked an app, the file is in that app, not on your phone.
The usual places
If you saved it to the phone, it's usually in Downloads. If you emailed it to yourself, check your inbox and your spam folder. If you used Drive, it's in the root folder.
The file arrived but it isn't a .txt
It's a .zip
This happens when you exported with media. Inside the .zip there's a .txt alongside all the attachments. Unzip it and pull the .txt out.
It opened in the browser instead of downloading
Some email clients display a .txt on screen rather than downloading it. Use "Download" or "Save as" instead of tapping the file.
Messages are missing from the file
This isn't a bug — it's how exports work.
The file is assembled from what's on your phone. It doesn't include deleted messages, anything lost when switching devices, or expired disappearing messages. Reactions aren't included either.
If you restored an old backup, the export will contain whatever was in that backup.
The file opens but something looks wrong
The days and months are swapped
The export never states which order it writes dates in: most of the world uses day/month and the US uses month/day. When the file contains any day above 12 the order can be worked out on its own, but a short chat may contain none, and then the reading can come out inverted. It's easy to spot: the date range sprawls across a whole year when the chat lasted two weeks.
Names appear that aren't people
A line that starts with something followed by a colon looks a lot like a message with an author. A chat full of lists — "milk: two", "note: call back" — can confuse things, though a candidate has to recur across several days before it counts as somebody.
Some messages have no author
Those are the group's system lines plus any message that couldn't be attributed. They aren't discarded: they stay in the timeline, they just don't get added to anyone's total.
The export worked but the analyzer won't open it
Now for the other side of the problem, when the .txt exists and something goes wrong on upload:
You're uploading the .zip
The most common one by far. A .zip can't be read: unzip it and upload the .txt from inside. If your unzipper leaves a folder behind, the file is in there, and it's the only one with that extension.
It's a .txt, but it isn't a chat
Any old text file won't do. If no line has the shape of a date, a time, a name and a message, there's nothing to count, and you get a notice saying so rather than an empty dashboard.
The file is empty, or nearly
This happens with conversations that were cleared on the phone before being exported. Open it in any text editor: if there are two or three lines inside, the problem is upstream in the export, not here.
You picked the wrong file from the zip
An export with media brings dozens or hundreds of files and only one of them is the chat. The ones named like a photo or a voice note aren't it.
In every one of these cases the file is read inside your browser, so a failed attempt uploads nothing anywhere and leaves no trace: you can try another file as many times as you need.
You can't do it from a computer
Neither WhatsApp Web nor the desktop app has an export option. It's exclusive to the phone app.
What you can do is export from the phone and send the file to your computer by email, Drive, or cable.
When nothing else works
If none of this helps, try a short chat first — one with only a few messages. If that exports fine, the problem is the size of the big chat. If it doesn't, it's the app or the phone.
Restarting the phone fixes more cases than seems reasonable.
